Is There Something More?
“God has set eternity in the human heart.” —Ecclesiastes 3:11
As I sat at my computer, wondering what to share with you this month, a question came to mind:
Is there something more?
It is a simple question, but it can open the door to some of life’s deepest questions. We spend much of our lives moving from one responsibility to another. We care for our families, go to work, serve our church and community, and try to meet the needs of each day. Yet even when life seems full, we may quietly wonder: Is this all there is? Is there something more than what I have known so far?
That question reminds me of Nicodemus. One night, Nicodemus came to see Jesus. He was a Pharisee, a respected leader in his community, and a teacher of Israel. He was knowledgeable about Scripture and deeply committed to his faith. From the outside, he seemed to have everything a religious person could desire—knowledge, influence, and respect.
Yet he came to Jesus at night. Perhaps he came at night because he did not want others to see him. Perhaps the nighttime also reflected something happening within him. Despite all that he knew, something remained unsettled. He had seen something in Jesus that awakened a deeper question.
Nicodemus said: “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.”(John 3:2)
Jesus did not offer him a simple answer. Instead, Jesus spoke to him about being born anew—a new life that could not be achieved through knowledge, status, or religious effort alone. Nicodemus had come seeking understanding, but Jesus invited him into transformation.
In many ways, we are like Nicodemus. We may have faith, knowledge, experience, and responsibilities, yet still sense that something is missing.
We may wonder: What gives my life meaning? Why am I here? What kind of person am I becoming? Where is God leading me?
These are not merely philosophical questions. They are deeply human and spiritual questions.
Our culture often encourages us to move quickly, find immediate answers, and pursue temporary satisfaction. But the deepest questions of life cannot always be answered quickly. Sometimes we need to pause. We need to listen. We need the courage to admit that we do not yet know.
This month, I invite you to sit quietly with one question: Is there something more?
Like Nicodemus, we can bring that question to Jesus. We do not need to arrive with certainty or have the right words. We can simply come as we are—curious, searching, and open.
Perhaps this is where a bridge of faith begins: when we take one honest question and bring it into the presence of Christ. We may not see the entire path before us, but that question may become the first step from what we have already known toward the new life God is inviting us to discover.
