A GREETING from our pastorNovember, 2025
Dear MUMC Family and Friends, A heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord is only possible if we have eyes to see the gifts we have received freely from heaven. Without seeing those gifts we already have in our lives, most likely we would pray a prayer of empty words or a prayer said by Charlie Anderson, who is a cantankerous widower with a family of grown children during the Civil War in the movie Shenandoah. His deceased wife had told him to raise the children with faith, so he takes them to church and prays before meals, but he makes it clear to the Lord who is doing all the work. This is his prayer for their Thanksgiving dinner: “Lord, we cleared this land. We plowed it, sowed it, and harvested it. We cook the harvest. It wouldn’t be here, and we wouldn’t be eating it if we hadn’t done it all ourselves. We worked dog-bone hard for every crumb and morsel, but we thank you, just the same anyway, Lord, for the food we’re about to eat, amen.” But when Charlie was finally able to see his life, his family, and his children not as possessions but as gifts from the Lord, he was able to join his fellow Christians in singing "Praise God from whom all blessings flow" with his joyful heart. As we enter the month of Thanksgiving, may the Lord open our eyes to see many generous gifts we have freely received from heaven and others so that we may be able to pray this prayer from our hearts: For food in a world where many walk in hunger, For faith in a world where many walk in fear, For friends and family in a world where many walk alone, We give you Thanks O Lord. With a grateful heart, Sue Sermons in November Nov. 2 2 Corinthians 4:5-18 We fix our gaze on the things that cannot be seen Nov. 9 Jeremiah 29:1, 4-9 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16 Give thanks in all circumstances Nov. 16 Glen Van Fossen, lay speaker Esther 4:14-16; 9:20-22 Queen Esther Nov. 23 Pastor Carly Kuntz, guest preacher Isaiah 43:18-21 Doing a New Thing Nov. 30 Isaiah 2:1-5 Our Hope in Jesus Christ |
