Green Team Community Garden
The MUMC Green Team has developed a community garden on our Church property.
During the 2017 growing season we started with four demonstration gardens. The focus was on education and awareness programs that gave us time for major site preparation, fencing and storage shed construction. We installed two elevated (wheelchair accessible) gardens and two 4’ X 8’ raised beds on the west end of the parking lot. These gardens were purchased from the Victory Garden Initiative organization and used as demonstration gardens.
In 2018 we built five 14' by 14' raised bed plots the are now available for planting. The funds to build the beds were donated by the Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club. Congregation members have successfully grown lettuce, radishes, carrots, peppers, zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers and beets in the gardens this year.
The MUMC Community Gardens has partnered with Victory
Garden Initiative, Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club,
Ozaukee Master Gardeners, Ozaukee County Extension,
First United Methodist Church of Hartford and the West Bend
Community Gardens for all environmental policies and space
rental agreements. Copies of the agreements and soil testing
results are available in the MUMC church office.
Our 2019 wish list includes a garden fence, entry gate, storage
shed and on-site water.
There will be 10 garden plots available in early spring, 2019 and we could quickly increase the number available if there is strong interest. Our team will also offer several spring planting seminars to interested people.
